The Value of Experience
7/23/07
Jeanine Szczesniak, Summer Intern
In college, almost every person learns the true value of a dollar. While
some still fail to manage it, many take the experience and are slightly more
conscious afterward. When it comes to life after college, experts are now
saying how important it is for college students to have learned the value of
experience, as well. So we spend our summers finding out not only what our
respective industries are like, but hoping to get enough expereince to help
give us the edge we need to get the "perfect" job once we graduate.
I, like most of my peers, am no exception to this. However, while most of my
friends who are interning have spent their summers making copies and getting
other employees coffee, I have been much more fortunate. After researching
countless companies in the Charleston area and interviewing with Trio
Solutions Inc. I was hired as the 2007 summer intern. Majoring in
communications, having a background in marketing, and experience in web
design, my hopes were high that Trio Solutions would be the perfect fit, and
to no surprise, it has been.
From day one I have been taken under the wing by each person at Trio and
shown the ropes. Instead of simply making copies, I create press releases,
update client websites, help manage projects like CreateAthon, and assist in
planning events like Taking the Field for Autism. When I leave in August to
go back to Virginia Tech and finish out my senior year, thanks to Trio my
portfolio will be outstanding, but it will certainly not be the only reason
I valued the experience.
There is something to be said for a company that knows how to run
professionally, is incredibly successful and yet makes you feel like family.
It's a balance, which from what I understand, many companies lack. For
instance when something trageic happens like what did at my college in May,
not even an hour had passed when I got a call from Trio to make sure I was
okay and offer any support I needed. Even the little things the company does
to make work more personal are seen in everything we do. Where some
companies may have casual Fridays, we may go to Blackbeard's Cove to ride
go-karts after work or sit on the third baseline together at a Riverdogs
game.
It is these experiences all together that have made my summer in Charleston
so enjoyable, and to be honest they are the reason I don't want leave.
